What Are Unclaimed Funds?
Unclaimed funds — also called abandoned property — are financial assets that have gone unclaimed by their rightful owner for a period of time. Ohio law requires financial institutions, insurance companies, utilities, and other holders to turn these assets over to the state when they can't locate the owner. The Ohio Division of Unclaimed Funds then holds them indefinitely, waiting for owners or heirs to claim them.
Common types of unclaimed funds include: forgotten bank accounts, uncashed checks, security deposits, insurance proceeds, stock dividends, tax refunds, and safe deposit box contents.
The official Ohio Division of Unclaimed Funds database is free to search. Check your name, former addresses, and family members.
